Buenas noches!

Not too bad of a day today.... we worked independantly on lesson 6 in our Math Operations unit - DECIMAL SUBTRACTION- and corrected the lesson 5 homework due today from yesterday. Tonight your homework in Math is to complete the lesson 6 worksheet - both sides- and make sure you are using the 5 steps or IDEAL for EACH QUESTION on the back!

In Science almost all of you had a chance to go outside and measure a shadow of a pole today (as part of our SLO #5 in our Sky Science unit) and I'm looking forward to compiling the results as a class tomorrow and discussing our findings! Don't forget to finish reading that little booklet I gave you in class today and to fill in all the blanks as well for tomorrow in class.

Also in Science you need to be going outside at night and working on the 3 sheets in your sky detective folder and please post your observations on the blog as a comment.

Finally in PE, we are starting our dance unit tomorrow and remember to come with a positive attitude because everyone must participate and we want to have a nice time before the holidays.

So today in Science we worked on our SLO#2 and learned the difference between seasonal and circumpolar constellations, why we only see some at certain times of the year and others year round or not at all, and of course some specific examples of each, and what an asterism is. We also made star finders (which you will get tomorrow) and learned how to spot some common circumpolar constellations and stars like polaris, casseopia, the big dipper, and signus. Tonight's homework in Science might unfortunately have to be postponed because it seems to be pretty cloudy! Try just in case but it may have to be saved for the NEXT CLEAR EVENING. As for Math, lesson 4 worksheet A must be done for tomorrow which we will correct first thing! At least make sure you review the notes from class today as all of that information is important!

The more hands on observation you can do in this unit the better your understanding will be! Remember all you need to be an amateur astronomer are clear skies, and a basic knowledge of what to look for and where to find it. Binoculars can help too but are not necessary!

OK, WOW! I guess it's been a while heh? Sorry everyone.
Hope the long weekend was great, restful and PRODUCTIVE (for some of you!)

Also, I wanted to say thanks so much to all of the parents who made appointments to come out and see Mrs. Babki and I - we thoroughly enjoyed our time with all of you and we LOVE your kids! Hey kids! Hope you are having a nice weekend because I'm not! Spent another evening in emergency because Marisol had a fairly intense reaction to some medication, and I'm at the school as we speak workin' away instead of playing outside! Oh well - I suppose things could be worse.

Hola chicos! thanks for a great day! please remember I need you fundraiser sheets in NOW!

Math - we continued to work on SLO#3 by adding to the tool kit and we reviewed the divisibility rules for 1,2,5,10,3,6,9. Make sure you know the new three - 3,6,9 for tomorrow and make sure lesson 10 worksheet is completed as well!

Science - we continued on SLO#7 by making observations and inferences about a tree cookie in class. Please make sure that the TREE'S LIFE sheet has been completed for tomorrow so we can all discuss it together. Hey kids! Just wanted to get something up here quick for all you keeners (Lisa : ) ) but I hope to add more a little later.

In Math today we continued to work on our SLO#3 - multiples -by playing a fun little game in 2's and then we played the L10 game from Friday but this time properly! I also handed out the notes on DIVISIBILITY rules to add to your multiples/factors tool kit. For homework you are to come to school tomorrow with the rules for 1,2,5 & 10 memorized!

In Science we continued to work on the SLO #7 -tree cookies- by having a discussion and for homework you are to complete your notes on the handout from last Thursday. Remember, once on the internet, go to WONDERVILLE, then click on GAMES AND ACTIVITIES, then select AGES 10-12, and finally click on A TREE GAME. follow the prompts and don't forget to answer the questions on the front of your sheet and fill in the chart on the back. These will be your notes so do a good job and them in class tomorrow!

HIP HIP HOORAY FOR 6A!!!!! Not only were we top sellers for grade 6 but we were top sellers for the ENTIRE school! Sorry you guys didn't win 6B but you were awesome too and it was really fun competing back and forth!

6A - I just wanted to say one more time, so that your parents could see, how proud I was of you this afternoon in PE class and I am really hoping that this effort and enthusiasm continues!

Now for the actually school work today...good start to multiples in Math. There is no homework for those who are all caught up and tomorrow you will have a chance to play some Math games on the computers to help you better understand multiples. Make sure your parents have seen and signed your Math test and you get it back to me as soon as you have done all of the corrections.

In Science, we finished up with the cycles and our SLO #3 (6A we have a bit left to do tomorrow but not much) so tomorrow we can start something new! Also remember we have the Science test Friday and you should be reviewing your notes.

In Science we focused on our SLO #3 today - CYCLES AND THE IMPORTANT ROLE TREES AND THE FOREST PLAY IN EACH. Your homework is to review our crazy notes and make sure you have THOUGHTFULLY answered the 3 questions I gave you in class. Here they are again:

Holy Smokes what a hectic week! So far I've been resting all weekend because you guys tired-ed me out!!!!

Well way to go on the fundraiser 6A & 6B - but I have to tell you that I'll be glad when this is over!!! It is really fun but it is turning you guys CRAZY and in turn your CRAZINESS is driving me nuts!
6A don't forget about what I told you in PE in regards to our placing and cards left to sell - DEADLINE IS MONDAY NOON TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ANY PRIZES so sell sell sell and get that money in ASAP! The cards should be distributed to you Tuesday and then we have a big wrap-up assembly on Wednesday. 6B - you've done your best, just relax...you deserve a break...no more selling just take it easy and focus on your studies...OK?!

Today was so hectic and silly I'm not sure I even remember or care to remember what we did in class other than waste time - oh well lets do a better job tomorrow! In Math today we continued to work on our problem solving as part of our SLO #2 by doing lesson 3 in the orange duotangs. That is due to be completed for class tomorrow am so that you can correct it. Remember to follow the 5 step process or the IDEAL way and here it is in case you forgot.

Develop a plan - what will you do with the info to solve the problem

In Science today we did more work with our SLO #6 - leaf parts & identification - and did a fun group activity as a formative task. I think I will change the quiz to Monday but keep going over your notes and you also need to do the leaf scavenger hunt (large sheet) for Friday as well. I've decided to collect them as an assessment so make sure they are done. 6A you have yours already and 6B you will get yours tomorrow but you can start collecting leaves now.

I expect you on your BEST behavior tomorrow during our academic awards assembly and remember as a result there will be no PE and then you will be with me 6A (Mrs. B 6B) and it will be a catch up period so please have all of your unfinished tasks at school ready to go or a good book if you are all caught up.

GREAT DAY TODAY 6A & 6B!!!!! Math and Science class were both lots of fun, I thought, and I hope you are working on your checkerboard problem as we speak!!!!!

In Math today we started on our SLO#3 - problem solving and I was impressed with all of the strategies you were able to share. We did a few word problems on the smart board and then I blew your minds with the checkerboard problem. Actually, it isn't as hard as it first seems, especially once you have a strategy in place and you figure out the PATTERN! Remember to "think outside the square", fill in the entire sheet and be prepared to explain your strategy tomorrow in class. To get a donut you must not only have the correct answer but be able to explain how you got it as well.

In Science we jumped ahead a bit and started on our SLO#6 - leaf classification - so you could get some "hands on" experience before it all falls to the ground and blows away! Be sure to review your notes tonight and start looking for concrete evidence of everything we drew in class!

ADVISOR CHALLENGE TOMORROW - and it's the final one so if you want a pizza party you'd better get your game on and be ready to blow up, tie and pop balloons...let's do this!

Also, FUNDRAISER COLLECTION DAY TOMORROW - bring in your money and we are close to winning pizza there too but I think Fyfe's class is just ahead of us so SELL MORE NOW!

Lastly, we have started flag football in PE and we are outside for this unit so bring appropriate gym clothes and your water bottle because once we are outside we are staying out until it is time to change. You guys were great out there today!!!!

So today in Math we continued to work on our SLO #1 (see menu to the right), by completing lesson 8 in our duotangs (comparing and ordering numbers to 999 999 999). I also handed out a study guide for our first Math test tomorrow on everything we've done in Math since the start of this school year. This will be a SUMMATIVE task - for marks!

In Science we continued to work on our SLO#3 (see menu to the right) which was lots of fun! We continued to discuss the nutrient cycle and the roll the trees play within that cycle and the task for tomorrow is to finish the cut & paste activity we started together in class. Remember...you have the instructions and we went over them in class so be sure to do your best work - as always!

PE - remember we start flag football in PE Monday and we will be OUTSIDE NO MATTER WHAT so dress appropriately!

It is TERRY FOX day tomorrow for Fish Friday so wear school colors and be ready to have a great morning! Sorry I have a sub tomorrow - I'll miss you - but make sure you are all well behaved! Just so you know, there will be consequences if you are not.

Hello 6A and 6B students and parents...this is Mrs. Babki. Since Mrs. V. is so nice, she has allowed me to share a few important reminders on her blog! So here is goes:

Geography test Monday on the following: label the provinces and territories on a map, match the capital cities with the appropriate province or territory, find locations using longitude and latitude, and finally, measure distances between places using the map scale.

Everything you need to prepare is in your social studies binder (or should be) and agenda. Study, study, study!!!!

Hey kiddos! How was the weekend? I spent almost the entire time cleaning my filthy house and doing school work! I know...boo-hoo-hoo but I hope you all worked as hard on your LEVELS OF THE FOREST BOOKLETS for Science which are due tomorrow!

How is the fundraising going? Remember the next collection date is this Tuesday so PLEASE LEAVE ALL MONEY AT HOME until then!

Whew! One week under our belts! Hope you all have enjoyed this first week as much as I have! Don't forget that come Tuesday, our expectations are going to tighten up quite a bit and we expect you all to be able to adapt! Let me remind you what we've been talking about:

NO LOCKERS in between classes EXCEPT for after period 4 when you need to put EVERYTHING away before going to your first option.
Every core class we expect you to come prepared - both binders, agenda, homework folder and pencil case with all of your felts, crayons, scissors, glue, calculator, ruler, etc...
a change of clothes for PE and remember we will be running outside!
better listening to instructions and faster transitions...remember - we want to MAXIMIZE our time together so we have extra time here and there for fun things!
taking your homework folder and agenda home and back to school EVERY DAY

First of all I have to say CONGRATULATIONS on the Tug of war today in advisor!!!! You guys, both 6A and 6B were awesome and 6A - double awesome! I love how enthusiastic you all were and I can't wait for the next one!

Great work on the first few days in grade 6...remember although we haven't done much Math or Science yet, our focus has been on routines and organization which are also very important for success at school so PLEASE make sure you are working on both! That means school supplies, binders set-up, taking that homework folder and agenda home and back to school EVERY DAY...doing your job fish job, supporting your school family members however you can, and especially going to your lockers at the appropriate times.
For periods 1, 2, 3 you should have both binders, pencil case, agenda, homework folder and water bottle if you want one in class. I'm baaack!!!!

And it's GREAT to see you all again! I have to admit I have had mixed feelings about coming back and especially about leaving my little peanut BUT it hasn't been so bad after all and I would like to say THANKS to all of the staff and students who have been so welcoming and as a result have made my transition a smooth one!

Hi guys!

It's us again...just thought you might like a little update!

Marisol is now eight months old, 29 inches long and weighs just over 20lbs! She has four new teeth (just starting to show) to add to the two she already has and she's had her 3rd haircut already! She can sit up all by herself, she claps, and she can say "dada, mama, hola, hi, more" and probably some other stuff I can't understand yet. Her very first words were "mama" and that's what she usually says when she's upset : }

It sounds like you have all been keeping busy - how are Thumper and Flower doing Kali? And way to go on the play Tracey! How's cheer Alexa? What's new with you Alex? Thanks for the comments and it sure would be nice to hear from more of you!!!!!!!

Hi everyone! Happy New Year! Sorry it's been a while and THANKS SO MUCH for all your comments - Marisol and I love reading them! Speaking of Marisol... she turned 7 months old yesterday -YIKES!
Our first Christmas was fun but Marisol was more interested in the paper, ribbon and tags than in the actual presents! She was spoiled of course! She has two front teeth now and man are they sharp! She is eating food now...cereal for breakfast and peas and apples for both lunch and supper and she loves it! She babbles non-stop at home, practices her crawling everyday and loves to laugh just like her mom!

Hello again!

Hope you all are staying healthy and doing well in your classes! How did report cards go? We are doing great... Marisol was a bear for Halloween and has been doing a lot of rolling around and tummy time! She is really strong and soon will be crawling and sitting on her own. Hope all is well! Things are great at the Valgardson home and Marisol is growing like crazy. She is 4 months old, just over 27 inches long and she weighs about 17 lbs. Well thanks so much for all the wonderful comments you've been leaving for me to read... I miss you guys too and I can't beleive how fast Marisol is growing and changing!
She now "talks" a ton (I just wish I could understand it), she is constantly trying to sit-up and roll over, and she has started to laugh when I do really silly things and it is so cute I always start to cry! Gosh I love her so much it's CRAZY! Oh and she almost weighs 16lbs and is almost 26 inches long!
Other than that not much is new for me... Marisol and I walk every morning with Mrs. R and Marisol and I run errands, play, sing, babble, sleep, eat, read, bath, eat, sleep, eat, eat....

Hi kids!

It was so great to see you all even though it was only a quick visit! I would have liked to stay longer and hug you all but I still wasn't feeling totally healed from the c-section. That is crazy by the way! It is considered to be major surgery and in case you don't know what that means, it's when they cut you open to get the baby out. The cut they make is about 8 inches long and I was awake for the whole thing! They gave me a spinal so that I was basically dead numb from the chest down and so it didn't hurt but I could feel them doing stuff in there. My husband sat right beside me and at one point said he looked over and the doctor had parts of my insides out on my stomach to be able to get to the baby! YIKES!!! I guess that's why it is considered major surgery and why it takes so long to recover! I had several inner layers of stitches and 15 staples on the outside but the staples are out now.

Here's the scoop in case you haven't heard ...

I gave birth to a BEAUTIFUL baby girl and we named her Marisol pronounced MAH-REE-SOUL, with the stress or emphasis on the last syllable -sol. She was born on June 12th at 9:39pm. I went through 20 hours of labor, including 2 hours of pushing, and then had to have a c-section because she was too big! She was 9lbs 13oz and 22inches long. She has lots of thick dark hair and beautiful big blue eyes and of course I LOVE her so much! I have to be honest...child birth is definitely the HARDEST thing I've ever done but definitely worth it all! Everyone is healthy and happy but tired for sure and things are great! WELL, TODAY WAS THE BABY'S OFFICIAL DUE DATE AND STILL NO BABY... AND YES I AM GETTING A LITTLE IMPATIENT! I AM VERY BIG AND TIRED BUT ALL IS WELL! So lately I have been in competition/battle with two robins that are trying to nest in the overhang of the roof just above my front porch. They are so stubborn and they are driving me CRAZY!!! I don't want them to nest there because it is right above all of my flowers and they are making an absolute mess! So...every morning I go outside in my pj's, climb up on my front porch railing with a broom and try to knock what beginnings of a nest they have made onto the ground. As I do that, one of the robins (the mean one!) dive bombs me constantly and so then I try to bat him out of the air with my broom instead. It is ridiculous and we do this twice a day every...you'd think they would just give up and move somewhere else but no! Hope all is well with you guys...studying hard? Keep me posted!

A BENCHMARK is a reference point to help us make sense of something new. We use benchmarks to estimate amounts in regards to time, length/distance, weight, etc... The example I used in class was a fisherman and his average catch, and Kali suggested her shoe size as a bench mark. GREAT!

My favourite experiment so far was the one with the food colouring and cold/warm water (don't know the name!). It was really interesting because you could see the food colouring move when you put it in different water! The galactic bulge... that's a tricky one that's for sure... from what I've been able to find...

A bulge is a concentration of stars and lots of dust in the center of a spiral galaxy. It is the oldest part of the galaxy and therefore contains the oldest stars and matter. This dust makes it hard to see and study. Using the 4m (159-inch) Telescope at the National Science Foundation's Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile, and the Hydra spectrograph, they measured the speeds of nearly 3,000 stars, covering a swath in the bulge some 1 500 light years from the Galactic Center. The Galactic bulge, some 25 000 light years from the sun, is one of the oldest parts of the galaxy, yet it contains stars nearly as rich in metals as the Sun. Recent studies suggest that the bulge formed relatively quickly and was one of the first parts of the Galaxy to form. The bulge contains roughly 20 billion suns of material. WHY can't we see it from Earth? We can...but so faintly because it is surrounded by dust and so far away!

Can people live in Andromeda or an outer planet?

We could not live on an outer planet. As far as andromeda goes...we certainly couldn't live on a star but it is sort of the same answer as if we could live on an exoplanet...which would be another body like a moon or planet but in a different galaxy...as long as it had the right temperature, it had water in liquid form and air for us to breathe then most likely!

Can you live on an exoplanet?

Earth is the only planet we know of with life on it! Nothing else is well suited for complex life...it's either too hot, too cold, no air to breathe, no water...Exoplanets are planets beyond our Solar System and we've found them but they are very hard to see because they are so far away and there are too many stars with lots of light in the way. We are still trying to answer this question but who knows...maybe!(check out the brainpop on EXOPLANETS!)

When doing multiplication with decimals, you ignore the decimals until the very end, and multiply as usual. Once you are finished, and have an answer it's time to add the decimal point. To do this, you count the total number of decimal PLACES in the two multipliers and that's how many decimal PLACES should be in your answer!

The inner planets are closest to the sun and the are small & rocky. The inner planets are inside the asteriod belt.The outer planets are far away from the sun and they are Gas Giants. The outer planets are outside the asteriod belt.
I think Pluto is not considered a planet anymore because it is soooooooooooo tiny and sooooooooooooo far away. And, if it was considered a planet it would be an outer one and it's REALLY different from the other outer planets.

There are officially eight planets in our solar system according to the new information, excluding Pluto who is now a Dwarf planet. If you said nine that's OK too...for now until I tell you otherwise. Also, JUPITER is the LARGEST.

The first thing I did was multiply 6x3, and the answer is 18, so I wrote that down. Next, I added the three zeros in the question to the 18, so the answer is 18 000....GREAT JOB!
